Sing of the Sea

Guinevere is nothing more than a fisherman's daughter. She's lived in the small town of Warebonear-by-the-Sea all her life, yet she's never once been out on the sea. Her father refuses to let her go out and has never explained why. Despite the debt hanging over her head and a sense that she's never truly fit in consuming her, Gwen is determined to make the most of her life. When tragedy strikes, she's forced to change everything. Not just about how she acts, but how she sees the world.

Stay away from the sea.

My father would repeat that to me often. He always looked so terribly sad while saying so that I never argued. Never asked more questions. The most obvious one, of course, being why was he a fisherman if the sea was so terrible.

My attempt at remaining discrete was ruined almost immediately. Of course I had expected this, but it was still disappointing. The moment I stepped into the town square people were turning to look at me, then turning back to their fellows, probably to whisper amongst themselves. When Hirath sees me, he practically sprints in my direction.

The next few hours pass in a daze. Elders and children alike come to pick up their nets, or drop more off for repair. I charge just as I always do, a careful balance of enough to survive without ignoring what they have given me. Still, I don’t put much energy towards it. I’m far more occupied thinking about Delia and Ishtar. Mostly Ishtar.
